Serial

I went to look at a 986 for sale that is being advertised as a 1979 model. I crawled underneath it to get the serial number, and once I got home to verify it in my equipment guide book, I think my book says it's a 1978 model. I seem to be running into a lot of mis-identified IH tractors when it comes to serial numbers all the time. That 1456 that I bought earlier this Summer was being represented as a 1971 model when in fact it is a 1970 model. Does anyone else have this much trouble with being told the wrong year of a tractor? So anyways here is the number of the 986 in question: 255 Again, it is being advertised as a 1979 model, but if I am reading my book correctly, it is a 1978 model?

Case ih combine serial numbers

I also have seen some people at times really throw a monkey wrench into the deal by mistakingly quoting the seperate CAB serial number as the TRACTOR serial number. This 986 I looked at also had the narrow cab steps, so I think that is another clue that it is an older tractor, although I'm not sure exactly when IH started going to the wider cab steps on the '86 series. The '79 models is what I'm thinking, although maybe they started at some point during the '78 model production run. And another thing- this particular 986 does not have the electrically lit red tail lights on the back side of the fenders. There are only red reflectors in that location. When did IH go to actual electrically lit red tail lights as opposed to just reflectors? The '79 models?

So if anyone has their serial number guide handy, could you take a moment to check and confirm whether or not I have looked at a '78 or a '79 model 986, judging by the number I furnished above? Thanks, Rick G. Serial numbers is the only way to tell the correct year of production of farm equipment. I think what happens people buy a tractor or equipment in a certain year and this becomes the year of the item in their mind. However even though the equipment is new it might have been manufactured a year or two or more before it was sold.

Case Serial Number Breakdown

Serial

In years of slow equipment sales I have seen items sit on lot and not get sold for some time after it was actually produced. A story was told years ago that a man traded a tractor for a new model which was the same as his old one. Now his tractor was used and the one he traded for was new. However if the story was true the serial number on the new tractor was lower than the serial number of his trade in.It was not an IH. Yeah I've had trouble getting the wrong year too. When I went to look at my Steiger, they said it was a 77, got there and it was a early 76. There is a big difference between those two years under the sheetmetal.

They were crooks though, and probably knew it was an earlier one. I run into the wrong year thing all the time. This 1206 registry will make you pull your hair out when people spend large amounts of money to make a show plaque stating its a 1968 or 1969, when in fact it cannot possibly be later than a 67'.
