– Doordarshan is an autonomous Government of India founded public service broadcaster which is owned by Broadcasting Ministry of India and is one of two divisions of Prasar Bharati. It is one of Indias largest broadcasting organisations in terms of studio and transmitter infrastructure, recently, it has also started broadcasting on digital terrestrial transmitters. DD provides television, radio, online and mobile services throughout metropolitan and regional India, as well as overseas, through the Indian Network, for the 2012 Summer Olympics, live telecasts of the opening and closing ceremonies of the games were broadcast on its national channel. It commenced on 26 January 1967 and is one of the longest running programs on Indian television, National telecasts were introduced in 1982. In the same year, colour TV was introduced to India with the live telecast of the Independence Day speech by the Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi and this was followed by the 1982 Asian Games held in Delhi.
Now more than 90 percent of the Indian population can receive Doordarshan programmes through a network of nearly 1,400 terrestrial transmitters, there are about 46 Doordarshan studios producing TV programmes. The first TV serial, in 1976, was Ladoosingh Taxiwala, the 1980s were noted for shows such as Hum Log, Buniyaad and Nukkad and comedy shows like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi.
Mythological shows such as Ramayan and Mahabharat paved way for mythological and historical shows, such was their popularity that roads would be empty when they were aired. Bollywood film songs based programmes like Chitrahaar, Rangoli, Ek Se Badh Kar Ek, Crime thrillers like Barrister Vinod, Karamchand, Aparadhi Kaun, PC1008, Police File Se, Byomkesh Bakshi, Reporter, Tehkikaat, Janki Jasoos, and Suraag. Shows targeted at children included the ever-popular Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Tom and Jerry cartoons, and also He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Talespin & Duck Tales. The dubbed Hindi version of the Japanese anime Jungle Book was hugely popular, especially its introductory track, Jungle Jungle Baat Chali Hai, there were also comic plays of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy and Didis Comedy Show. Indian small screen programming started off in the early 1980s, at that time there was only one national channel Doordarshan, which was government owned. The Ramayana and Mahabharata were the first major television series produced and this serial notched up the world record in viewership numbers for a single program. By the late 1980s more and more people started to own television sets, though there was a single channel, television programming had reached saturation. Hence the government opened up another channel which had part national programming and this channel was known as DD2 later DD Metro. In 1997, Prasar Bharati, an autonomous body was established. Doordarshan along with AIR was converted into government corporations under Prasar Bharati, the Prasar Bharati Corporation was esablished to serve as the public service broadcaster of the country which would achieve its objectives through AIR and DD. This was a step towards autonomy for Doordarshan and AIR.
However, Prasar Bharati has not succeeded in shielding Doordarshan from government control, pAS-1 and PAS-4 are satellites whose transponders help in the telecasting of DD programs in half the regions of the world. Hindi film songs based programs like Chitrahaar, Rangoli, Superhit Muqabla crime thrillers like Karamchand, shows targeted at children include Divyanshu ki Kahaniyan, Vikram Betal, Malgudi Days, Tenali Rama.
